There are three dimensions that need to be considered when fitting a shoe.
1. LENGTH
There should be a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. This ensures your toes do not hit the end of the shoe when you walk.
2. WIDTH
Make sure your feet sit comfortably on the sole of the shoe and do not hang over the sides. The ball of the foot is the widest part – the shoe should not be stretched and tight in this area.
3. DEPTH
You should be able to pinch the top of your shoes. This ensures there is adequate room for your toes in the shoe.
REMEMBER...
- Expensive shoes are not necessarily good fitting shoes.
- A great number of foot problems are the result of ill-fitting shoes. Take the time to select appropriate footwear.
- There are different types of shoes for different activities. Make sure you suit your shoe to the occasion.
- The type of shoe you wear and how they fit can affect the health of your feet.
- Do not feel pressured by shoe sales staff: take time to try the shoes. If it doesn’t feel right – don’t buy it!
- Shoes that are too big can be as damaging as shoes that are too small or tight.
